It is similar to tennis but played on a smaller court using an underhand serve. Playing the sport with any proficiency requires tremendous leg power and upper body strength and at my age full strength, stamina and cardio are needed to stay competitive with the younger players. A combination of supplements and a focus on breathing and oxygen consumption have allowed me to maintain a level of ability equal to that of when I was a much younger player.
As I grow older, I find that breathing is the aspect of physical activity that hinders me the most. When I was younger I took breathing for granted during exertion. I would simply recover when there was time to rest between points or games. These days I find that when I am not getting enough air my body is weaker, causing me to lose more points. When I was younger I could just ‘suck it up’ and play.
These observations lead me to focus on sport supplements that would increase the efficiency of my breathing and my absorption of oxygen. The first supplement I take before sports is called Ginsana. Ginsana has a special ingredient called G2G extract and is a form of ginseng. I first learned of it through the books of the sports scientist Dr. Michael Colgan. Dr. Colgan is a scientist of the highest integrity and not someone to make suggestions lightly. I have read many books on health, supplements and nutrition and I still find Dr. Colgan’s books to be the best written, mainly because of the extent of the scientific evidence used to formulate the ideas in his books. Hence, when Dr. Colgan revealed that the extract G2G could increase Vo2 Max, I was impressed and immediately began taking the supplement. In studies it has been found that taking Ginsana for 4 weeks can increase your Vo2 Max, which is what determines the maximum level of oxygen you can utilize at any given time. This is exactly what I needed for sports, as my breathing began to weaken due to aging. Incidentally, professional athletes train in preseason for weeks to increase their Vo2 Max. The idea that 2 pills a day for 4 weeks can accomplish the same effect seems almost supernatural.
The next supplement I take prior to a sports event is 500mg of niacin. I learned of the power of niacin from the book “Oxygen Multi-Step Therapy,” written by Manfred Von Ardenne. The scientist and researcher Manfred Von Ardenne spent 20 years researching the effects of oxygen and cancer and although it was a scientist named Otto Warburg who first made the connection that cancer thrived in low oxygen environment, it was the scientist Ardenne who followed up Warburg’s ideas with over 20 years of solid research. Ardenne spent twenty years using live subjects, looking for methods to increase the oxygen levels in the body in order to defeat cancer. A common slogan, “cancer doesn’t like oxygen” was taken from Ardenne’s work. He found that 500 mg of niacin and ginsana could increase oxygen levels in the bloodstream. He used these ideas for cancer therapy, but I have adopted them to increase sports performance. After reading Ardenne’s research I added 500 mg of niacin to my pre-sports protocol along side my regular Gisana.
Another supplement I take prior to sports or workout is CoQ10. I only take the gel capsule form of CoQ10 as it has been proven to be more effective than powder capsules. I believe the most effective CoQ10 sold in the U.S. is from Life Extention (They can be reached at 800.544.4440). You can do some independent research online to learn more about the many positive effects of CoQ10. The key to my inclusion of CoQ10 in my pre-sports supplement regimen is that it has been proven to increase blood volume and heart stroke. The increased blood volume and greater heart stroke power can enhance the energy and oxygen output of athlete and non-athlete alike. I take a very high dosage for sports (400 mg) and have found that it allows my body to respond like a young man to any exercise.
These are the three supplements are the cornerstone of my ability to stay competitive and active at my age and on the occasion that I forget to take them, I always get a reality check. When I don’t take them, I begin to feel my heart and breath straining within minutes of hitting a tennis ball. I almost feel in danger, as if I could die if I don’t quit soon. Additionally I can tell my Vo2 max is way off, because I begin to feel weaker as I run to hit the tennis balls. When I take these three supplements, I can go for 1 and ½ hours easily, feeling no discomfort what so ever and hitting the tennis ball as hard at the end of the workout as at the beginning! I always wonder and am amazed at how my body responds to exercise after I take these supplements. It is almost like being 30 years old again.
Check back soon for part two of my advice for how you can improve your performance in sports and exercise.

The Importance of Monitoring Mouth pH

We’ve mentioned the importance of measuring pH often in this blog, but you may have noticed that we usually recommend you test the pH level of your urine. This is because it is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get an impression of your body’s pH. This impression gives us an idea of whether or not we need to improve our pH levels. Regulating body pH is vital to health and you will find a variety of sources in journals, libraries and online that stress this fact. Our point in all of this is not to spend time telling you how important our body pH is to your health, but to show how to take the mysteries and secrets out of the whole process of determining your pH health. We have shown you how to measure pH for yourselves using pH strips or litmus paper and we have discussed many ways to change pH levels, depending on your current state.

Looking back at previous posts, we noticed a conspicuous lack of coverage regarding the pH of your saliva. Though this is the measurement that most people are aware of that utilize pH strips, we have intentionally omitted discussing saliva pH, because it is a limited tool. It merely measures the status of the mouth (and the mouth alone) at the time of the test. High acid levels in the mouth can be an indicator that there is trouble with the digestion, because we continuously swallow our saliva. If our mouth is high acid it likely possesses too much bacteria, and swallowing this, it is scientifically reported, can even affect heart health. A mouth with more bacteria also runs a greater risk of becoming infected if cut. I personally measure my saliva pH every night to be sure that it is balanced around 7.0. I don’t want an acid mouth, as this can eat up enamel in the teeth and cause your mouth to taste bad (and probably doesn’t help your breath).

There’s a simple solution that has kept my mouth pH perfect for the past decade. I gargle about 7 times a day. Anytime I wake up during sleep and go to the bathroom I gargle. I wake up in the morning I gargle. I gargle at different opportunities and times when I am at home. I gargle after dinner. It’s important that you use a mouthwash that contains Xylitol. I learned a long time ago that clinical studies have shown incorporating Xylitol into your daily oral health routine can lead to improvement. I am a firm believer in the legitimacy of this claim as I’ve used a Xylitol-containing mouthwash called Spry for a very long time and have not been disappointed (I also find that it isn’t as harsh as other mouthwashes which makes it ideal for multiple daily uses). My pH has remained at perfect balanced levels for many years and I believe this is true because of using Xylitol in my mouthwash.

I suggest that rather than spending a lot of money on products to improve the pH levels in the mouth, you simply try Spry or a similar product and then use the pH strips to measure your pH levels in the mouth.

An added benefit of gargling is the removal of bad tastes from the mouth that occur after sleeping and a temporary improvement in breath freshness.

Note: Gargling more often when you begin to feel signs of sickness can kill bacteria in the mouth (lowering the burden on the immune system) and may lead to improved recovery time.
We’ve covered a variety of techniques, from eating foods high in phosphorus to using bicarbonate, particularly 20 minutes after a meal. Well an additional way that the body can decrease acid excretion is through the use of the amino acid glutamine (amino acids are building blocks of protein), which triggers a sequence of chemical reactions that lowers acid by expelling it from the body through our urine when acid levels are too high. If you measure your urine pH and your levels are below approximately 6.5, you want to be sure your daily intake of food includes enough of the amino acid glutamine to help regulate acid balance.

You can take glutamine supplements to ensure that you are getting enough glutamine daily, however the body usually uses the nutrients we consume in tandem, where groups of nutrients work together to complete the many processes of your body. In order to help my body processes run efficiently, I usually won’t take supplements without a proven multivitamin and mineral. It is important to remember that glutamine is important, but that we’re also aware that there are many other amino acids. Many of these amino acids can cancel each other out when consumed at the same time and glutamine can easily lose its effect when coupled with many other proteins and amino acids.

I get around this problem by supplementing glutamine via undenatured whey protein. Whey protein is the equivalent of a multivitamin and mineral, except it provides the amino acids that help us build our protein structures in the body. The whey protein is a natural product that is loaded with amino acids in the perfect proportion to allow for maximum absorption. While the absorption of most whey protein is nearly 100%, undenatured whey protein reaches an almost supernatural absorption of 150%!!! Not only do you receive the benefit of this absorption, but whey protein supplementation is shown in studies all over the internet to boost the immune system up to 500%!

I take a glutamine supplement in a whey protein shake everyday. I also take a multivitamin and mineral with my whey protein shake to best maximize the synergy between these nutrients. The glutamine helps keep your acid levels balanced in the body via urinary excretion and without it, you could lose some your body’s ability to maintain acid-base balance.

Additional Methods for Battling Alkalinity

When your urine pH readings are too high (usually above 7.5 pH) you are too alkaline and likely anemic. If you are too alkaline, it means you do not have enough hydrogen (acid) in your bloodstream and body. This lack of hydrogen leads to anemia because it is an essential ingredient in the formation of red blood cells.

We have told you before that the easiest way to test your pH is through the use of pH strips (which can be found online or at your local drug store). If your pH reading is above 7.5 then you need to determine a plan of action to increase hydrogen in your body. This would also give you the material needed (hydrogen-acid) to possibly increase your red blood cell count, which in turn can rid you of anemia

One simple way to increase acid in the body is with apple cider vinegar. There are entire health books written touting the use of this common household ingredient. My own preference is to use balsamic vinegar in salad dressing and eat a lot of pickles. I even eat pickles before I eat Mexican food and Spaghetti dishes. I love pickles. I also take 3-5 grams of vitamin C daily, which also has a lot of acid.

Often people with high pH (high alkaline) also have a lot of digestive problems, and turn to products which are intended to reduce acid when they get heartburn or burning sensations in the stomach. I believe this is a mistake sometimes, as the lack of acid can cause burning sensations as well. When I get a burning sensation directly after a meal, I turn to bicarbonate rich products such as Alka-Seltzer or bubbly water (the bubbles are produced by bicarbonate). However, when I get a burning sensation an hour or two after a meal, I try a pickle or even eating a little protein or other food that might stimulate more acid production in the stomach. I notice that this sometimes relieves burning sensations that seems delayed after eating. My observations have led me to believe that most burning sensations directly after a meal are due to an overabundance of acid, but that delayed burning sensations are due to a lack of acid and require a different set of actions.

Drinking water helps balance overly alkaline pH in at least two ways. Ingesting water allows the body to excrete more of the bicarbonate buffering products in the bloodstream which keep you more alkaline. Also the body needs normal amounts of fluids in the body and bloodstream to keep harmony and balance. However, I recommend that you learn to drink in sips. If you drink a large amount of water rapidly, it will lead to a large amount of the water going out the urine. This leads to the loss of minerals in the urine and less desirable water retention. I usually drink 3-5 sips every few minutes, even during vigorous exercise.

There are thousands of books written about digestion problems, individuals with low acid levels and anemia, aside from those specifically advocating apple cider vinegar and other home cures. Yet often a simple problem (low acid) requires a simple solution (more acid). Remember that you can use litmus paper to measure your urine pH and determine your body’s pH status. If you are too alkaline, the solutions may be as simple as eating a pickle before or during a high protein meal (protein needs a lot of stomach acid for digestion).

Cancer and Managing pH Levels

Nobel Prize winning research has shown that lactic acid and low oxygen levels allow cancer to thrive in our bodies, both of which are common when our pH levels are too acidic. There is a great deal written to promote neutralizing pH levels (7.0) in order to combat cancer and we have, in fact, posted many ideas on this blog regarding gaining stable pH levels.

However, there are those in the medical and alternative fields who advise changing our bodies’ pH to unstable but highly alkaline levels in order to completely act in opposite to high acid levels. Unfortunately, the methods that many individuals are suggesting to establish these alkaline levels contradict the basic laws of chemistry.

Many of these methods would have you ingest or drink alkaline substances that are around a pH of 11, 12, or higher. These are highly alkaline substances and it may seem logical that these substances might help change high acid levels of 4.5-5.8 to more alkaline levels and therefore combat cancer. Unfortunately, this is scientifically wrong as basic chemistry dictates that the closer two chemicals are alike in pH, the more they can influence each other. Generally, about 1 full pH point is about the largest difference in pH between two chemicals that will still have a great effect on each other ( i.e. a chemical of 6.3 will influence a 5.8 acid reading many times more than a 11 alkaline reading effecting 5.8 acid level!).

Therefore, it is wisest to work on changing high acid levels to weak acid levels (high acid-4.5/5.8 urine pH and weak acid 5.9/6.9 urine pH) and once you have finally achieved weak acid levels, take the next step to the stable and balanced neutral level of 7.0 (a balance between acid and alkaline). You can find a variety of methods for neutralizing your pH throughout this blog. Phosphorous will change high acid to weak, while baking soda in water (bicarbonate) can be used to change weak acid to neutral.

Note: Baking soda dosage can be dangerous. Read this blog carefully to review the dosages I have used for more than a decade on myself and investigate on your own by going to the Arm and Hammer baking soda website.

Treatments that attempt to get your urine pH levels to 7.5 or higher may not help you combat cancer as you think. A 7.5 level will likely lead to anemia, which is due to low acid levels in the body (alkaline pH). Anemia is likely to weaken you and your digestion. Fighting cancer by purposely developing anemia is not a tactic that we here at Restore Unity would recommend.

Incidentally, when you develop anemia your hydrogen levels drop in your body and this leads to a loss of red blood cells. This would likely lead to a reduction of iron levels which is associated a great deal with cancer, as cancer uses iron and iron creates free radicals in the body that can damage DNA and lead to mutated genes that lead to cancer cells. So reducing iron levels may be a key in the fight against cancer and getting to high alkaline levels might really only affect cancer due to the change in iron and not directly because of the change in pH.

If you are truly inclined to combat cancer, we might recommend blood donations. This should help your pH levels if you are acid, as giving blood will reduce the acid in the blood. Your iron levels will also be reduced, which should help you fight cancer.

In our opinion, treatments that attempt to reach alkaline levels in the bloodstream are inferior to simply giving blood donations which provide the same benefits by reducing iron levels and helping pH get more alkaline.

If you have cancer, consider blood donations if your iron is high (you can check with blood tests) or your pH is acidic. Learn how to measure your urine pH so you know what is going on with your pH levels to determine if your are acidic. Aside from blood donations this blog describes methods that can help you balance your pH levels. Also carefully consider the person who recommends cancer treatments that turn you into an anemic.

We also make one final recommendation regarding cancer. Pray for your soul and ask others to pray for you. We have seen this work first hand for a friend with cancer throughout the body and brain. A complete remission occurred and only all the prayers she received could account for this remission as far as we are concerned. You can find more information about prayer and cancer at our sister website Guardian Psychic. You will find a great deal of information on prayer and the type of prayer that will be heard in the spirit world. Good luck!

Sleeping pH

When we sleep, our oxygen levels drop (we take fewer and shallower breaths) which leads to a rise in acid levels. Yet, how much does our acid level change while we sleep? I have tested this out on myself for years and find that my level usually drops about ½ a point during sleep. One of the things we point out in this blog is the importance of attempting to discover the truth of things. You’ll often find that proper action follows in the wake of truth. If we allow ourselves to strictly rely on others, we must trust their information and if they are wrong, we are usually the only ones who suffer the consequences.

Fortunately, there’s a simple way for us to discover how much our pH levels change while we sleep! In previous posts, we discussed the use of litmus paper (pH strips) to measure body pH levels. By measuring our urine pH level before bedtime and upon our first morning urination, we can discover for ourselves if our pH levels become more acid in our sleep.

Interestingly, I have observed (by asking other people to check out their pH levels while asleep) that individuals with alkaline or neutral levels of pH do not appear to experience this increase in acidity. People with Alkaline levels, as discussed previously, are low in acid and often anemic, while those with Neutral levels possess a stable balance between acid and alkaline levels in the body. I have found that weak or strong acid levels get more acidic after sleep. If you are a high acid person to begin with, then becoming more acid during the night is not ideal as it can make your body more susceptible to a variety of ailments.

If you check out your pH levels and discover you are weak acid or strong acid (these values are reflected on the pH strips after you measure your urine), then you should consider eating more alkaline foods and less acid foods in the evening. Additionally, you can use the baking soda protocol we have described before on this blog. Take about a 1/8th to 1/4th teaspoon of baking soda in water 20 minutes after a meal. Your stomach needs acid to digest the food but by waiting to ingest the mixture until 20 minutes after a meal, you alkaline the stomach, while still giving it a chance to digest your food.

The second thing I do is to take a small amount of baking soda and water again at bedtime to help combat the acidic changes of sleep. I use 1/8th teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. You should realize that baking soda is a strong chemical in the body, becoming bicarbonate when mixed with water, and be careful to never overdo on baking soda and water after meals and at bedtime.

I do one other nighttime protocol for acid. I eat an orange! Now every book and every lecture I have ever heard says vitamin C is acid and can wear out the enamel of your teeth. I have made two discoveries on my own. The first is that when I measure pH after eating oranges, the pH levels of my saliva and urine actually become more alkaline! If vitamin C is such a strong or even weak acid, why does my saliva pH become more alkaline? Secondly, as I have discussed previously in this blog, I once took high levels of oral vitamin C during a time after I had become infected with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and my enamel never suffered.

The acidity of Vitamin C and oranges may not matter when we eat these foods and mix them in our saliva. It appears from my own self testing of saliva pH that saliva may have properties that neutralize the acid and actually gives the vitamin C in the mouth alkaline properties.

It is important to remember that not all people are acidic. Some have ideal pH levels while others are alkaline. In these cases, you don’t need to worry about your acid levels falling while you sleep. On the other hand, if you already possess weak (about 6.0 to 6.9) or strong acid (about 5.9 to 4.5) levels, then you don’t want to suffer a half point drop during sleep, as this will raise your total acid balance to about 5 times greater in the morning than when you went to sleep. Remember that a 1 point change in pH adds about 10 times more acid, so a ½ point change in pH will add about 5 times more acid! These kinds of acid levels can be very bad for us, as we know many conditions such as cancer thrive in acid conditions.

My protocol to combat night time drops of pH levels is the following:

1) Baking soda protocol after supper.

2) Eating alkaline vegetables or fruits in the evening, but usually vegetables.

3) Using the baking soda protocol at bedtime, but usually not exceeding a 1/8th teaspoon dose.

Once again you will need the pH strips or a roll of litmus paper to check out your own readings of your body pH. You can use this information to evaluate intelligent paths of action to best help your body balance pH. I have come a great distance in finally achieving a 7.0 urine pH levels (the ideal level). For years I was averaging 5.8-6.2 levels and on bad days (where I would eat horrible or over exercise) my pH levels would drop below 5.5! It took me nearly 9 years to get the balance I have now. I have learned how much and what types of exercise can exert terrible changes in pH that can last for days, what foods can change pH in a heartbeat, how much my pH can become more acidic when I am stressed, how much one bottle of coke can drop pH, and so on. You can all learn anything you want regarding keeping your own pH levels balanced. You just need to carry around a roll of litmus paper and monitor and self-observe your pH levels at various times in the day and night. You will discover for yourself what is true for you. I have put many of the lessons I learned for myself in this blog, lessons that took almost a decade to learn.

Keep it simple and learn what works for you!

Manage Your Free Radicals

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PlaceType"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PlaceName"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>
This blog was created with the goal of providing its readers with ideas that will help them take charge of their health. There are all kinds of guides, books and self-help tapes explaining how to improve ourselves and our health but how do we know if any of it will really help? We usually take these claims to heart based on the authority of the source, without spending even a second to research the claims ourselves. There’s a term for people who blindly trust the words of others without requiring any supporting facts: gullible.

I always look for ways to determine the truth of anything suggested by others. One excellent way is to search peer-reviewed journals for studies that demonstrate scientific fact. Websites like Pubmed.gov are easy sources of reliable information and studies that can give you insight on the claims you hear tossed around in the health world.

There are also self tests, such as the litmus paper tests we have described in previous articles, which measure urine pH and help determine your body pH. If you don’t mind spending a little money and want to involve a professional, there are also lab tests (ex. blood tests, urine tests, etc.).

As research continues to probe the workings of the body and mind, it keeps reinforcing and discovering that excess free radical production is involved in almost everything regarding disease and health. If you read alternative health magazines or study journals that report scientific fact, you’ll notice that mention of the involvement of free radicals appears frequently in relation to almost every aspect of health.

We have already reported in this blog that the best way to combat excess free radicals to date may be the use of ORAC’s. ORAC’s can combat free radicals before they are even produced! There is a laboratory test that can give you insight into how well you are controlling the production of free radicals in your body, called the C-reactive protein test. The typical use for this test is to indicate your current heart and artery health. Science has progressed from the first ideas that heart health was determined by blood fats, to the more current idea that inflammation of the arteries and the heart may be more predictive of heart attack and stroke than blood fats. The C-reactive protein test is a measure of the inflammation in the body.

It is known that heart disease creates free radicals in the blood and arteries. Excess free radicals can lead to conditions that increase inflammation. Therefore, inflammation is often an indicator of free radicals. For example, in artery health and heart disease, it is the oxidation of the plaque that is usually responsible for the dangerous buildup that can lead to blood clots. Oxidation is the process that creates free radicals and can lead to inflammatory processes such as the increase of macrophages and other immune system components in the area of damage (oxidized plaque).

My blood fat lab results aren’t very good, so until I can get my blood fat levels under control, I need to do the next best thing, which is to be protective of heart health, which means keeping oxidation and inflammation levels down. More and more research is beginning to indicate that the best predictor to date of stroke and heart attack may be the C-reactive protein test. There are several anti inflammatory supplements I take to control inflammation such as curcumin and 5 loxin (both from Life Extention-www.lef.org). I also use UDO’s oil (an omega 3 supplement found in health food stores) to help boost my HDL levels (HDL levels can help control oxidized LDL which can help control inflammatory levels in the blood). I use two tablespoons per day. There are other supplements you can use to control inflammation in the body, but my preference is to focus on ORAC’s. ORAC’s are ‘before the fact,’ and can help control excess free radical production by stopping free radicals before they are produced. Although Tufts University recommends 3000-5000 ORAC’s per day for a male, I usually try and get closer to 10000 ORAC’s daily, since I have a few conditions that I believe can be helped by additional ORAC support.

For now my C-reactive protein score of .68 (with anything under 1 constituting a good score) indicates that I am on the right track in regulating my inflammation and excess free radical production. Free radicals are known to contribute to heart disease and stroke as well as destroy DNA (which is a key component in the rise of cancer). Diabetics run the risk of up to 50 times greater free radical production due to the possibility of increased glycation (a biological process which produces free radicals as a by-product and often occurs more heavily in diabetic individuals). In the end, it seems fairly simple, you should limit free radicals whether you are healthy or not.

Everyone: Learn to optimize your health. Keep inflammation and free radicals down. Use the C-reactive protein blood test to monitor your success. Using this test is one way you can take charge of your own health. These tools allow you to make informed decisions about your necessity for ORACs and anti-inflammatory supplements. Don’t blindly buy the claims of the countless individuals out there hoping to capitalize on your trust. Doing research, via self-testing and reading scientific studies, will be the difference between being gullible and knowledgeable.

NOTE: To further clarify, it is the production of excess free radicals that may tip the balance of health. There are many instances where free radicals are produced in the body. For example, the generation of free radicals during metabolism is a necessary and normal process that ideally is compensated for by an elaborate endogenous antioxidant system. However, due to many lifestyle, dietary, and environmental situations, excess radicals can accumulate, resulting in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress (leading to production of radicals) is what we have discussed as leading to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases that account for a major portion of deaths. ORACs and antioxidants can delay or hinder oxidative stress. This may help in maintaining health and preventing disease.

Vitamin C: Controlling Stress in Diabetes

The body stores 20% of its glucose supply in the liver. The body has an emergency response to stress which releases sugar, along with cortisol, into the blood when in emergency situations. The point is there is a lot of blood sugar produced in the body aside from digestion of foods. A great deal of this additional glucose stored in the body is released from stress situations. The DK50 formula produced in 1998-2002, designed to combat stress in diabetes, contains one method to help control blood sugar. Any alternative formula intended to help control blood sugar, that does not address the sugar load the body can produce, is not a complete formula.

One of the ingredients we chose to help combat stress in diabetes was vitamin C. There are several reasons why we felt a 1 gram dose of vitamin C would be valuable to diabetics. First of all, a serious side effect in diabetes is heart disease. One out of three people that die from heart disease in the United States is diabetic! The primary way that heart disease occurs is along the part of the artery wall that has contact with the bloodstream. There are several layers of the artery wall, but the basement membrane is the part we are concerned with in this discussion. The basement membrane is where lesions and plaque can form that lead to heart disease. Collagen helps bind and keep the basement membrane strong and not leaky, which helps to keep calcium and fats from forming lesions at these cell levels. Vitamin C is necessary in the formation of collagen. Without adequate levels of vitamin C to help produce the collagen necessary in the basement membrane, artery walls are at greater risk of being leaky and porous, which can allow greater infiltration by fats and calcium. This can eventually lead to degeneration of the area, followed by proliferation of plaque lesions and inflammation. This is the perfect setting for plaque to eventually rupture the artery wall and form clots which can lead to heart attack and stroke.

Diabetics typically have high blood pressure, excess body weight, side effects from diabetes, and many other disease conditions. The body fights degeneration and disease with antioxidants and ORAC’s. Antioxidants help repair the body and ORAC’s help donate electrons to the body (which helps stop damage from occurring - see article in this blog on ORAC’s). Vitamin C can act as an antioxidant and ORAC, repairing the body and donating its electrons to vitamin E to help vitamin E work better and longer in the body. Vitamin C can also be an electron donor in conjunction with other substances in the body. Donating electrons is a powerful way for the body to combat stress. The stress of diabetes requires more repair and support for the body than non-diabetics, which is why we chose 1 gram of vitamin C, 20 minutes before meals, 3 times each day. We felt that the combination of high blood pressure, greater blood sugar levels and other diabetic side effects demanded a higher dose of vitamin C to regulate the diabetic’s stress level. An additional reason we included Vitamin C in the DK50 formula, is its’ ability to bolster the immune system. We felt that with all the different diseases that a diabetic can be subject to at any given time required a hearty immune system to repel them. Given the necessity to find a dosage that would meet the needs of all users of the diabetic formula, we felt 1 gram 3 times a day would give the greatest benefit to the greatest number. We would suggest that diabetics need great amounts of antioxidants and ORACs to help combat the stress of diabetes. Contact us for information about high supplement ORAC products.

Note: Consult a doctor who has experience with supplements. Additional support may be required for a diabetic as their load of stress increases. An alternative doctor, such as those specializing in Orthomolecular science or the power of supplements and other natural means of healing, may have additional recommendations to help a diabetic combat the stress that comes along with their ailment.

N-Acetyl-Tyrosine: More Dopamine for Parkinson's

If you’ve been following our blog, you may remember my 65 year old brother who has Parkinson’s. In 5 years, he has improved to the point where he has only small shakes in the left arm and mild tremors in the right, and though he suffers from Parkinson’s dementia, it has not worsened since he began his supplement protocol.

One of the supplements he has taken over the past 5 years is N-Acetyl-Tyrosine at 2 grams a day. You may have heard of a Parkinson’s medication called Carba-Dopa. Well, Carba-Dopa is really an amino acid that is processed and eventually converted by the body into dopamine. Tyrosine is part of the chain that leads to dopamine production and tyrosine is actually processed and eventually converted into Carba-Dopa. (I prefer N-Acetyl-Tyrosine because it is more stable and water soluble than typical L-Tyrosine, which can result in greater bio-availability.)

There are a few advantages of Tyrosine over Carba-Dopa:

It’s less expensive!

There is a lot of controversy over the safety and benefits of Carba-Dopa, in that it seems to have benefits for Parkinson’s, but in the long term may actually lead to the Parkinson’s getting worse.

This seems like a no-brainer. Tyrosine can lead to more dopamine production, is less expensive than drug counterparts, and does not seem to have any side effects for a Parkinson’s patient when taken at dosages that are known to be non-toxic

.

My brother also takes an un-denatured whey protein shake daily. There are many excellent reasons to get whey protein into your diet every day. We’ve all been sold on the idea that we need a multivitamin and mineral daily, yet our body needs the building blocks of proteins everyday as well. These building blocks are known as amino acids, and whey protein contains all the essential amino acids in natural amounts. It’s important that it possesses the natural amounts, as many times these amino acids can cancel out each other when they are of equal amounts. Regular whey protein is fine for a protein shake, but un-denatured protein leads to greater absorption so I chose it over other whey protein.

There are many other reasons to drink an un-denatured whey protein shake daily and I will discuss these reasons in other posts, but for now the fact that you get all your essential amino acids in the right amounts is what matters. It also helps balance the 2 grams of Tyrosine. Amino acids interact with each other and if you supplement a single amino acid in high quantity, you are bound to deplete or affect other amino acids. The protein shake helps add back any amino acids that become depleted or otherwise made inefficient from frequent overuse. I always find it wise to consider balancing single supplements whenever possible. For example, I take 1 gram of niacin (vitamin b-3) a day. I try and balance this by taking a multivitamin and mineral high in B vitamins or a B-100, which has most of the B complex in dosages of 100 milligrams, to help balance my single dosage of niacin.

So, to review, the first supplement I recommended to my brother was Inositol to help with nerve conduction, followed by N-Acetyl-Tyrosine to increase the ability of his brain cells to help produce more dopamine. The next supplement we will discuss is included to calm the brain. This is vital in a condition like Parkinson’s where the body is hyper excitable and the symptoms themselves keep the cycle of excitation repeating endlessly.

Changing Acid to Alkaline

There is a great deal written and told of the possible threats to a person with high acid levels in their blood and body. A reading of 4.5 is ten times more acid than 5.5 which is ten times higher than 6.5 and so on.

A rating of 4.5 to 5.9 is considered strong acid. From 5.8 down to 4.5, calcium is generally lost. The body needs to replace this lost calcium and will often do so by stealing what it needs from our bones. This can eventually result in osteoporosis. It’s also important to recognize that recent research has pointed to high acid environments being a fertile field for cancer to thrive. High acid decreases oxygen levels and cancer has been discovered to thrive oxygen levels are low. Best case scenario is a rating of 7.0 to 7.5, which is considered a stable and neutral level of acid/alkaline balance. If your pH level reaches 7.6 or higher you’re alkaline.

Many people desire to neutralize their acid balance and assume that the best method is to use alkaline substances. For instance, I once heard someone mention that he was taking an 11 pH alkaline drink to regulate his acid. It seems rational to assume that the stronger the alkaline drink you take, the easier it would be to shift your acid towards a more stable number, such as 7.0, but unfortunately, this is simply not true. In chemistry the strongest changes are those that are within 1 point of the measurement you are trying to change. For instance, if you had a high acid reading of 5.5, you would need to use weaker acid substances that measured from 5.6 to 6.5 to become more alkaline. If you measured in at 6.0 then you would use even weaker acid substances from 6.1 to 7.0 to push the 6.0 closer to a neutral reading.

Now let’s assume you have constant acid readings when you check your urine pH. You also have a family history of cancer and you are concerned that your acid readings may help cancer cells thrive. With this in mind, you set out to neutralize your acid. From a chemistry standpoint, you would need to start eating foods that have high phosphorus levels, because phosphorus is the key mineral in our body that helps us maintain acid levels around 6.0 to 6.9. Remember that to change a strong acid such as 5.5 you will need a weaker acid. Weaker acids fall into the 6.0 to 6.9 category and generally are buffered and maintained by phosphorus which, luckily for you, is contained in most green vegetables.

As stated in my previous blog post on pH management, I also drink a solution consisting of a ¼ teaspoon of baking soda mixed into water around 20 minutes after I have finished eating, as this also helps alkaline the acid content of your stomach. If you measure urine pH after this baking soda and water beverage, you will see your pH changing towards more neutral levels. Even Perrier water 20 minutes after a meal can help alkaline your stomach acid.

Super Fats and HDL

Not all fat is bad for you. There are a variety of fats which can be either good or bad, depending on their balance in your body. For today, we’ll focus on the importance of the relationship between HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein), a “good” fat, and its “bad” cousin, LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein).

About 50% of heart conditions are related to heart disease, which is commonly referred to as the “clogging” of arteries. One of the main culprits in heart disease is LDL fat. The oxidizing of these fats leads to a great deal of free radical production and can eventually cause the rupturing of artery walls, heart attacks and strokes. HDL fats stop this process from taking place by clearing the LDL from your bloodstream before it becomes a problem.

If you were to picture our arteries as streets, the HDL serves as garbage trucks picking up the LDL trash and taking it to the dump to be destroyed. If the trash were left on the streets it would eventually degrade and destroy the neighborhood. The ratio of HDL to LDL in our bodies should not be greater than 1:4. When the amount of LDL becomes 4 times greater than that of the HDL, the HDL can no longer remove enough LDL to prevent it from oxidizing and degrading your body.

There are two methods that you can use to regulate the ratio between the two fats. You can eat foods and supplements to increase HDL and reduce LDL. In addition, statin drugs are available to lower your LDL. Foods high in Omega 3 fatty acids, such as fish and the fruit of the maranga tree are an excellent source of good fats that may help boost HDL.

Everyone: Each day determine you will eat foods high in Omega 3 oils (that help produce HDL fats) and supplement your diet with Omega 3 products of high quality. At the same time, eat low cholesterol foods and take supplements like Policosanol to lower your LDL. Focus on getting your HDL to LDL ratio down below 1:4. Good Luck!

I usually take two tablespoons of UDO’s oil (a brand of high quality Omega Acid blend available at most vitamin stores) to get my supplement of Omega 3 oils. I also take a supplement that is composed of the oil from NZ Mussels that has helped boost my HDL levels by 8% in two weeks! I have not found a supported recommended dosage so I have managed to invent my own via years of trial. First of all, I treat Olive Leaf Extract exactly like an antibiotic. I take it for the length of my symptoms and then add seven days beyond that point to guarantee that most of the bacteria are destroyed. Once I have stopped using Olive Leaf, I won’t use it again until I am sick to retain its potency and prevent the development of resistant bacteria. I take a high dosage of 10 or more grams a day because I have found no evidence that it is toxic and have done so for ten years without any side effects.

During the seven day period after my symptoms have ended, I usually start winding down the dosage. As a side note, some people may experience what is known as Herxheimers Reaction, which may give one the feeling that the symptoms are temporarily worsening. This is most likely a sign that the Olive Leaf Extract is working! This is due to a detoxification reaction that results from the death of so many harmful germs so quickly. If this should happen, consider decreasing your dosage by half for three to four days and increasing your water intake to as many as four glasses between each dose.

Another important step I take is to increase my ORAC units to 10000 per day. In a previous blog post regarding ORAC, it was noted that Tufts University studies have shown that a man needs about 3000-5000 ORAC units per day. I reason that when we are sick we need more ORAC units and therefore increase my levels during a sick period. I drink a high ORAC juice blend for my ORAC supplementation.

My final tip involves the supplement N-Acetyl-Cysteine (N-A-C) which serves many purposes, one of which being the reduction of mucous. As I mentioned before, I once was sick with Rocky Mountain spotted fever. I almost died, and the thing that almost killed me was mucous. The Rocky Mountain spotted fever led to a major increase in my mucous production. I had to sleep in a reclining chair for three nights because I couldn’t lie down without being choked with mucous. I kept taking large amounts of everything mentioned in this article including drinking lots of distilled water. You wouldn’t believe the amount the dosages I was taking. In the end, it was the N-A-C which served to relieve me of my most vicious symptom which was too much mucous.. Whenever you’re affected by an illness that leads to a large amount of mucous build up, I strongly recommend you think of N-A-C.

There are many other supplements and herbs you can take to help your body fight sickness. I usually add a few others depending on the specific condition. The supplements I mention above serve as my special fighters against any condition. Good luck.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://restoreunity.blogspot.com/2009/03/fast-relief-from-colds-and-flu-pt-2.html' title='Fast Relief from Colds and Flu!! Well, there are many recommended supplements, herbs, formulas and drugs, but the main purpose of them all is to bolster the immune system so it can do the hard work and kill the germs. I like to help my immune system out even more by following a few steps which can kill many of the germs in our throat, mouth, and sinuses and ease the burden on the immune system by stopping germs before they get into the body.

The idea is to kill as many germs as possible. I’ll usually gargle with a disinfecting mouthwash almost every hour when I first begin to feel sick. Each time you gargle you are cleansing your mouth of tons of germs. In addition, I use a nasal solution several times a day to kill the germs in the sinuses. You can make your own nasal solution by mixing one teaspoon of buffered Vitamin C powder in about four ounces of distilled water. The best method of use is to dip your nose into the mixture without sniffing; take your nose out of the mixture; and then sniff the mixture left on your nose. Personally, I only use ‘buffered’ vitamin C when sniffing into the sinuses.

The first thing I do when I feel I’m coming down with any type of cold, flu, or infection is take a dose of vitamin C. I usually take about 5 grams in the morning and at night. Vitamin C helps bolster the immune system, serves as a powerful antioxidant and is an electron donor (which we’ve discussed the value of previously in our ORAC post). It should be noted that too much vitamin C can soften your stool and cause diarrhea and that if this happens I recommend you cut back your dosage until your stool returns to normal. In the end, I try to take the highest possible dose that I can without affecting my bowel movements. I once was unfortunate enough to catch Rocky Mountain spotted fever and took a dosage of about 60 grams of vitamin C per day and surprisingly, I wasn’t afflicted with diarrhea despite the amazingly high dosage!

My second technique for fighting infections is to take large dosages of selenium. Though Selenium is toxic at high dosages (most doctors would not recommend over 400 mcg per day), I find that 800 mcg of selenium per day, for a few days, serves as a powerful adjunct to bolster the immune system. I lower these high dosages after a few days and in my experience, a couple of days at that dosage has shown me no ill effects over the past ten years. Regardless of my personal observations, I would not recommend high dosages of selenium for anyone until they have done research and spoken to their doctor about this mineral. The form of selenium I take is called methylselenocysteine. I also boost my vitamin E intake from 400 IU to 800 IU. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant in the body. I take the Gamma form of vitamin E which is mixed with Tocopherol. There are multiple forms of vitamin E and I prefer to use supplements that combine several different vitamin E ingredients.

Be sure to check back in the next few days for the second part of my method for finding quick relief from the flu, colds and infections!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://restoreunity.blogspot.com/2009/03/fast-relief-from-colds-and-flu-pt1.html' title='Fast Relief from Colds and Flu!! The nerve covering helps conduct the nerve signals. When the nerve covering is working poorly, it can affect the nerve system.

Approximately 5 years ago, I devised a supplement protocol for my older brother who was suffering from phase 1 Parkinson’s and Parkinson’s dementia. After starting the protocol I devised, his Parkinson’s stabilized and even improved! We will tell the whole story through this blog, but as of now we will discuss the specifics of the protocol that improved his nerve function.

I started by looking into the possibility that the Parkinson’s shakes could be controlled through optimizing nerve function. The first thing I researched was the myelin sheath (the nerve covering). I initially consulted the book Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, 10th edition (a present I received from a friend) which states that diabetic neuropathy in animals can often be induced, “which exhibits prolonged conduction times similar to those seen in human diabetes.” Our nerves operate best when they are working at optimal speed. When nerve conduction slows down this can lead to degeneration of the nerves. Since I read this information in Harrison’s, I have seen many other examples which support my conclusions.

The book continues to state that, “the involved nerves were found to have a marked decrease in myoinositol content that could be reversed either by insulin treatment [this was an article about diabetic neuropathy] or by feeding myoinositol [pg 675].” I considered what I read and reasoned that prolonged nerve conduction could possibly be improved by feeding a person myoinositol. My background in nutrition led me to the supplement Inositol, which causes your body to produce myoinositol when ingested! I reasoned that including Inositol in my brother’s protocol might help keep his nerve conduction optimal and possibly combat his Parkinson’s shakes.

I knew that before I administered anything to my brother, it was essential that I figure out the proper dosage. Whenever I need nutritional information I refer to Dr. Michael Colgan, a world renowned nutritional scientist. He won’t print anything unless it has been thoroughly researched and supported by reliable sources. In his book, Your Personal Vitamin Profile, he states that, “nerves contain fifty times the Inositol level of the blood. Inositol is essential to proper conduction of nerve impulses. The level in nerves declines with age and so does our speed of reactions. It has no known toxicity. The best natural sources of Inositol are lecithin and wheat germ.” The key point I took from this passage was Inositol’s lack of any known toxicity. After evaluating this information, I came to the conclusion that a dosage of 1 gram a day would prove itself safe and beneficial.

After some deliberation, I reevaluated my initial decision and decided to increase his Inositol dosage to 3 grams a day, as part of a health and protein shake. Three grams may sound like a major increase, but I reasoned that an individual suffering from Parkinson’s would need more Inositol than a person that did not have a degenerative disease. Later I learned of another supplement called IP6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate), a form of Inositol involved with messaging in the body, which I included in hopes that it would work synergistically with the regular Inositol and increase their effectiveness.

Everyone: The first step I took in battling my brother’s Parkinson’s was to improve his nerve conduction. I felt that poor nerve conduction could be a symptomatic factor of Parkinson’s, independent of any dopamine considerations. My older brother’s reaction times have improved since he started taking the Inositol powder every morning in his health shake. This post will discuss Chromium Picolinate, an important ingredient of our formula, and insulin resistance.

Most Type II diabetics are aware that diabetes is a condition of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is when your insulin is working inefficiently. Insulin helps get glucose into the cells, so when insulin is not working at its full potential, excess glucose remains in the bloodstream. Glucose can also accumulate, unutilized, within cells.

We’ve included Chromium Picolinate as the first ingredient in our DK50 formula because it is proven to bolster insulin sensitivity. This improved insulin sensitivity also helps burn fat, which is something diabetics need to consider.

We found a dosage of 200 mg, 20 minutes before meals, 3 times a day to be beneficial. At the time we were developing DK50, the drug Metformin (a prescription drug which improves insulin efficiency) wasn’t on the market. If you plan to use Chromium Picolinate and Metformin in tandem, it is essential that you monitor your blood sugar and dosages very carefully. You may find that you’ll need to adjust your Metformin dosage.

When we evaluated the DK50 formula in 1998, we found several studies that showed improved glucose levels in subjects given 600 mg daily of Chromium Picolinate. We have discovered that there are at least 7 other types of Chromium products. Some or all of these may work as effectively as Chromium Picolinate, but the studies we read were successful using the Picolinate form which is why we chose to include it in DK50.

We feel that DK50 is revolutionary because unlike other alternative diabetic formulas, it addresses insulin sensitivity directly rather than through the indirect route of improving glucose levels. Diabetics need an alternative formula that helps control blood sugar and insulin sensitivity. Our DK50 formula had diabetics taking 200 mg of Chromium Picolinate 20 minutes before meals. We’ve seen no evidence of adverse side effects at the 200 mg dosage level. Before using any ideas found in this post, make sure you check with your own doctor and take time to do your own independent research.

Our next post on the DK50 formula will discuss stress, its affect on diabetics and the ingredients we used to combat it. When we are under stress, the body can release great amounts of glucose into the bloodstream, independent of that released from digesting food products. With the inclusion of our next ingredients, we were able to formulate DK50 to combat stress and the glucose it releases. Yet, occasionally, we would like to remind everyone that the power of our mind, and its control over our body, is valuable in dealing with any condition or health issue.

It is important that we keep in mind the immense and powerful creation that is our body. It has been estimated that more than a million macromolecules per minute are transported between the nucleus (center of the cell) and the cytoplasm (the interior of the cell outside of the nucleus) in the active eukaryotic cells in humans. These transports can take place a million times per minute! (Harper, Biochemistry 515)

It is estimated that the average body has over 70 trillion cells. Inside each cell there are an estimated 1 million transports taking place each minute. That is 70,000,000,000,000,000,000 transports taking place in the body per minute. In 60 minutes this is 420,000,000,000,000,000,000 transports. That is 1,008,000,000,000,000,000,000 transports in 24 hours!

The point of this demonstration is to increase your awareness of the marvels of our body and to re-ignite your faith in its healing powers. Faith is a powerful tool of the human mind.

Imagine the grand design of such a body and realize we can heal from anything. What limits can be put on such a creation as our bodies? We must also have faith in the immensity and grandeur of our conception and this faith will take us down the right road to healing and health.

For our bodies to properly execute the process of healing it is essential that we be well nourished; the rest we leave up to creation. We will from time to time include other such miracles of our body in this blog to remind everyone that there is always hope, especially in regards to healing, as long as we do not interfere with the process by abusing ourselves with inappropriate drugs or treatment. Also, remember to be very careful when electing surgery. Once something is removed there can be no turning back and no miracle for the body to perform. Sometimes surgery is necessary, but always remembers to carefully consider all of your options.

Get The Most Out of Your Drinking Water

There is a lot of confusion out there regarding the best drinking water. The basic waters available are tap water, spring water, purified water, distilled water, alkaline (bubbly or carbonated) water, and water with increased oxygen.

Tap water is the least pure of all drinking water. It’s up to you to decide if you want to put impure water into your body. Spring water is usually weakly purified, but may have the added benefit of minerals. When you drink any water, the water will generally carry minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients out from your body along with waste. Spring water contains many of the minerals you lose when you drink water, so it is a good idea to drink spring water for its ability to replace lost minerals. These minerals may or may not be worth the impurities, but personally, I prefer to take a high quality multivitamin to replace any minerals I lose daily from drinking non-mineral water.

Purified water has many toxic substances removed via a filtering system. This is much healthier water with fewer impurities. Distilled water is water in a chamber that is heated to steam, which is then moved into an adjacent chamber where it is condensed and turned back into water. This distillation process leaves the water almost totally pure. This is the most pure of waters and almost any toxic substances are left behind in the first chamber when the water is turned into steam and rises into the final chamber. The main argument people make about distilled water is that you lose a lot of minerals when you drink it. Once again, I suggest a mineral supplement to replace those lost minerals, rather than drinking less pure water that contains minerals, such as spring water.

Alkaline water, such as Perrier, club soda, and other waters that are advertised as high alkaline, may or may not be filtered. The common denominator between these beverages is the presence of carbonation. Usually the process that makes the water alkaline also kills germs, although it would still need purification from toxic chemicals and the like. Regrettably, there is a large drawback in that alkaline water can interfere with digestion. Your digestion requires stomach acid and the alkaline quality of the water can interfere with stomach acid, thereby preventing it from properly breaking down food. People who drink alkaline waters and even bicarbonate sodas right before meals or during meals are interfering with their digestion. An easy rule to remember (which I’ve mentioned in a prior post), is to always drink these beverages at least 20 minutes after meals in order to allow your stomach acid time to work on your food. Do not drink them before or during meals if you care about proper digestion.

You may remember a previous post wherein I discussed Anemia, a disease which results when a person is too alkaline. It is important that a person know if they are too alkaline before drinking alkaline drinks. If your body’s pH is alkaline, stay away from carbonated beverages and alkaline water. I gave him a pH strip (discussed in my acid/alkaline balance post) and we were surprised to discover that his pH was close to 7.5, almost anemic in measurement. I suggested that his over consumption of Perrier may be influencing his body to the degree that it could be part of the reason for his fatigue.

A recent trend in the bottled water industry is the marketing of water that is said to possess higher oxygen content than competitors. The jury is still out on this one. I don’t drink these waters because extra oxygen most likely means more free radicals. We discussed in another post that there is almost universal consensus over the past several decades that free radical damage is the main reason for disease, degeneration, and aging. I am cautious about drinking water that may increase my free radical production.

Everyone: Realize that the type of water you drink can influence your health a great deal. You drink water everyday. Take extra care to choose wisely, as this is an important area of healthy living.

Remember that any drinking water carries some minerals out of your body through urine, regardless of its mineral content or method of filtration. All waters being equal in this regard, I find it most beneficial to drink distilled water for its purity and lack of toxicity, and take supplements to replace the minerals I lose from regular water drinking.

The Diabetic Formula

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>
In 1999, I started a company that focused on fighting diabetes using a blend of supplements and herbs to control blood sugar. Since then, many other products have appeared and advertised their help for diabetic blood sugar control.

Unfortunately, flak from doctors made it difficult for me to succeed. I developed a formula called DK50, which caused improvements in the condition of many diabetes sufferers, only to have their doctors command them to stop the treatment. At the time, supplements meant to help diabetics were not main stream and many doctors stood firmly against something they considered unscientific, even if it helped their patients. Though supplements are widely available today to help diabetics, my ideas were a bit too far ahead of their time and after 4 years of struggle, my partner and I were forced to give it up.

I was saddened because I knew I had a formula that addressed the one issue that all such formulas to date do not address, which is the hepatic sugar released by the liver. The alternative formulas today simply attempt to balance the blood sugar that goes up when diabetics eat too many carbohydrates. This works well enough, but when the liver starts adding sugar to the bloodstream this can send blood sugar levels soaring, even with the best of care.

Additionally, in the book Harrison’s “Principles of Internal Medicine,” a medical book used in med school (a gift from a friend), I discovered a section on diabetes that presented a possible cure for diabetic neuropathy! I was amazed that this medical book had a simple possible cure, yet I had never seen it anywhere, leaving amputation as the basic treatment for neuropathy once it had progressed too far. Why are the doctors not using their own cure for neuropathy listed in their own textbooks, which might lead to the avoidance of amputation?

I added this supplement from the medical textbook to my protocol, as well as another supplement that addressed nerve conditions of the eyes that diabetics are susceptible to and a supplement for the shooting nerve pains that diabetics get in their legs. Considering the new discoveries up to now, I would also add another supplement to help combat heart disease in diabetics if I were to start DK50 again.

I have decided to use this blog to disseminate the DK50 formula to the public. I hope and pray that this will benefit diabetics. I know first hand many of the horrors of diabetes and the DK50 formula was meant to address them. I couldn’t make it a successful endeavor in 1999, but maybe in the year 2009 the Internet can get it out to the public. To date I have not seen any formulas that address the stress release of blood sugar from the liver nor the side effects of diabetes. Through this blog I hope to do both.

A Parkinson's Miracle

My older brother is 65 years old. 5 years ago he was diagnosed with stage 1 Parkinson’s and Parkinson’s Dementia. He was suffering from shaking in his left arm and tremors in his right. He walked with a shuffle. He also had slight slurring of speech and his face had begun to take on characteristics common to those with Parkinson’s; a big deal to someone who made a living as a salesperson.

His brain was X-Rayed and showed genetic defects that could explain Parkinson’s disease. I asked my brother if he wanted me to devise a supplement protocol to help combat his Parkinson’s, and he happily agreed.

Shortly after we began his protocol for Parkinson’s, he started to stabilize. His slur disappeared. He began to take normal steps and his shuffle abated. His face returned to normal. The shakes in his left arm drastically diminished, to the point where they only occurred in the evening, if at all. His right arm still retains a slight tremor. Keep in mind that this is nearly 5 years from the date of his diagnosis of stage 1 Parkinson’s (with all signs of deteriorating to stage 2).
In mid 2008, I added a high ORAC juice supplement to his protocol, which he would take in 2-4 ounce servings morning and night. This supplement seemed to buffer him daily. It allowed him to deal with more stress before finding his shakes and tremors acting up. He commented that it helped him feel better and he seems almost dependent on his ORAC drink these days.

The final stage in this 5 year period was the recent introduction of a new supplement to his protocol that research shows can raise Glutathione levels. I will discuss the importance of Glutathione further in a later post, but the point is that research has shown that injection of Glutathione has made rapid and enormous improvement in Parkinson’s. To date, there haven’t been any effective super Glutathione supplements, because oral supplements have not been able to get inside cells effectively.

He started this new supplement and in less than four weeks reported that his shakes and tremors were 75% improved! Now for the first time in 5 years, he is showing actual improvement, rather than simply staying stable! In addition, his dementia has not progressed in 5 years. As long as he takes notes to aid his short term memory, his dementia does not handicap him in any way. I will be blogging on all the supplements that my older brother has been taking the past 5 years and the ideas behind them, as well as at least one very effective drug that is considered low toxic.

Keep checking Restore Unity Blog if you’re interested in learning more about how to combat Parkinson’s, because more articles will be appearing soon!

Do you know how to balance your Acid / Alkaline levels?

I Googled the heading Acid/Alkaline balance. 3,730,000 search listings appeared! There are literally tens of thousands of books written on the subject. Nowadays everyone talks about alkalizing their bodies, having too much acid in their systems and how cancer can not live in an alkaline environment, as well as tons of other claims about acid being bad and alkalizing your system being good.

However, how many of you really know whether you need to be more acid or alkaline? For example, the disease Anemia is the result of an alkaline pH balance of 7.5 or higher. Anemia arises from a lack of hydrogen in your body (hydrogen is acid). Red blood cells require hydrogen, and an alkaline pH balance is an indication that you may lack enough hydrogen in your body to produce adequate numbers of red blood cells. In this case, it would be beneficial to add more acid to your body to balance out your alkaline state. Adding more vinegar to your diet is a great way to add acid to an alkaline body. On the other hand, a person suffering from cancer would do best to reduce the acid in their body, as cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment.

The difficulty in balancing your pH is in knowing where to start. Most of us have no idea what our body’s pH balance is at any given time. A blood test is insufficient in that it records one moment in time, and given the relative infrequency of such tests and the constantly shifting nature of our body’s pH levels, it becomes necessary that we take additional steps to monitor our body’s health.

The easiest way to take control of your pH balance is to regularly test your pH using litmus paper. Litmus paper, also known as a pH strip, changes color to illustrate the pH level of any liquid it absorbs. Your urine’s pH is a measure of your muscle and blood acids, in roughly equal amounts. Upon exposure to the urine, the strip will change color to indicate a pH level ranging from 4.5 to 8.3 (the exact color of each level will depend on the particular brand of test you use).

pH Levels

4.5 - 5.9 Acid

6.0 – 6.9 Phosphorous Balance

7.0 – 7.4 Neutral

7.5 and beyond Alkaline

Due to the concentration of muscle acid (which is more acidic than blood acid), urine tends to report as slightly more acid than your actual level, therefore an optimal pH reading via litmus test would be somewhere around 6.8 – 7.0. A pH balance below 5.8 can lead to an environment that will break down the calcium in your system. Calcium is needed for many of your bodily functions, including the beating of your heart. When your body is lacking calcium it will begin to take what it needs from your bones, often leading to osteoporosis! While pH over 7.5 denotes a person who has too little acid, a pH balance of 6.0-6.9 indicates weak acid. It is phosphorous which tends to keep this level in check

Everyone: Test yourself several times a day (once you’ve got a feel for it, several times a week) and take note of the things that affect your pH! It’s important that you don’t let propaganda fool you into thinking that you are too acid. By measuring your own pH, you take control and can determine the right steps to keep your body in balance.

You will find it is quite a challenge to make long term changes to your pH. Exercise, diet, stress and other environmental factors are constantly influencing your body’s pH level and make it hard to make large changes successfully. Personally, I have always been skewed towards the acid side of the fence, but by eating a lot of green vegetables (for the phosphorous content), and drinking a solution of baking soda and water, I managed to get my pH close to 6.2. A ¼ teaspoon of baking soda mixed with water will almost instantly neutralize the pH of your body. This trick is most useful about 20 minutes after a meal. The baking soda solution neutralizes the acid produced for digestion; yet by waiting 20 minutes, you still allow the acid enough time to work on your food. In time, I discovered another useful weapon in the struggle for good pH balance: brown rice. Brown rice has a pH value near 7.0, which you will remember is the perfect pH for your body. Also I have a lot of iron in my blood (I discovered this because I take frequent blood tests to monitor myself). I started donating blood, to reduce my iron levels. The combination of donating blood (reducing my hydrogen levels) and eating brown rice has left me with near perfect pH balance of 6.9 almost 24 hours around the clock. My road to get perfect pH balance has been a long and experimental journey of many years. Through the use of the litmus paper, I have been able to guide my pH to its present stability.

If you would like an inexpensive blood test, visit the Life Extension Foundation at www.lef.com.

Background & Mission Statement

Most cutting edge health and medical technologies take years and sometimes decades to reach the public. The standard was developed in a collaborated effort by the National Institute on Aging and the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging. Stable molecules contain electrons in pairs. When the molecule loses an electron, this molecule becomes a free radical. These unbalanced molecules bounce around and create damage. The body repairs the daily damage that happens to it using antioxidants. Unfortunately due to the constant barrage of free radicals, antioxidants are stuck playing catch up in a losing effort.

ORAC units help keep the body healthy in a different way. ORAC units lend electrons, preventing unbalanced molecules from creating havoc to the body. Many times ORAC units help stop damage to the body before it begins! This is a much more effective way to keep a person healthy, than to fix him after the fact (via antioxidant repair after the damage has occurred). This reduces the total number of molecules needed to be repaired, thereby increasing the effectiveness of antioxidants if taken in tandem.

The average human takes in about 1600 ORAC units. The scientists of Tufts University recommend that we increase our average intake to somewhere between 3000-5000 units per day. As it turns out, many antioxidant rich foods (blueberries, red wine, tomato paste) contain a high quantity of ORAC units, as well as black tea and many other fruit and vegetables.

Unfortunately, it would be very difficult to consume the optimum amount of ORAC units in a day without a major change in diet. A person would have to eat at least ten servings of high ORAC fruit and vegetables per day just to reach the minimum daily standard. When you combine that with the other demands of healthy eating habits, it’s obvious that a new focus is on the horizon for the health minded individual.

It’s essential that we make a conscious plan to add those extra ORAC units to our daily intake:

Women: Go out there and add an additional 1500 ORAC units per day!

Men: I want you to add around 3000!

Below you’ll find a link to a listing of ORAC values of many edible items. All values are listed in relation to 100 grams of the substance. If you’d like to know the value per gram simply divide the ORAC value by 100.

ORAC VALUE DATABASE

Personally, I usually have at least one cup of black tea daily for about 1000 ORAC units. Whenever possible, I eat Italian food for the tomato paste and supplement an unusually high amount of vitamin C (vitamin C supplements are high in ORAC value) . I also have two highly concentrated ORAC fruit drinks of between 2 to 4 ounces to supplement my ORAC intake. It’s up to you to make the effort and commit to hitting your ORAC quota each day, if you are truly serious about combating the effects of aging.
